Symbolising human brotherhood and equality, the Golden Temple in Amritsar is one of the most spiritual destinations in India. This religious place of the Sikhs is visited by thousands of travellers, irrespective of caste, creed or race, who seek blessings of the almighty. A tour to the Golden Temple bestows an unearthly peace that lets you attain the ultimate nirvana. Apart from its shimmering outlook what attracts the visitors is its legendary history that talks about the legacy of Sri Harimandir Sahib.
The Golden Temple was first conceptualized by the Fifth Nanak, Guru Arjan Sahib, who wanted to create a central worship place for the Sikhs. He himself created the astonishing architecture of this holy place. Though prior to Guru Arjan Sahib, the task of building the holy tank (Amrit Sarovar) was designed by Guru Amardas Sahib, it was finally executed by Guru Ramdas Sahib, under the supervision of Baba Budha Ji.
Sri Harmandir Sahib stands elegantly on a 67ft. square platform in the middle of the Sarovar (tank). It features doors in all the directions. The architecture of the Golden Temple presents a melange of Hindu and Islamic architectural styles. The outside of the Gurudwara has been adorned with intricately engraved gold panels with a striking dome gilded with 750kg of gold. All year long this Gurudwara echoes with soul soothing chants of the Guru Granth Sahib (the Sikh holy book) hymned by the priests and musicians.
It is believed that a dip into the holy waters of Amrit Sarovar washes away all your sins, helping you escape the cycle of rebirth.
A visit to the Golden Temple is a must for all those who wish to experience the powers of divinity. Amritsar itself oozes a spiritual aura that can make any atheist turn theist.
Amritsar is well connected by air with rest of the country. Its Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport operates both domestic as well as international flights. The state also enjoys extensive rail network, and thus, travelling by train is also a great option for those visiting here from metropolises like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, etc. Apart from this, a broad network of roads connects Amritsar with northern states through regular buses.
