A significant holy destination, a masterpiece of architectural wonders and a proud exemplar of rich Indian history - Konark Sun Temple truly earned its popularity around the world. A culmination of Oriya architecture, this temple was raised in 13th century by King Narasimhadeva. The temple has been built in the shape of a colossal chariot featuring seven horses and twelve wheels, taking the sun god, Surya, across heavens.
The Konark Sun Temple is the most visited destination in Orissa which has been a World Heritage Site since 1984. The name ‘Konark’ is made of two words- ‘Kona’ meaning corner and ‘Arka’ meaning the Sun. That’s why the Sun God worshipped here is called Konark. It is believed that Lord Vishnu after killing the demon Gyasur placed his belongings at several place, including his Conch at Puri, Disc in Bhubaneshwar, Mace in Jajapur and his Lotus at Konark. Since then, this temple stands as a significant landmark where pilgrims flock to worship Sun God, the healer of all skin diseases. The main entry to the temple is on the eastern side, facing the Hall of Offerings (bhogamandapa). It was later added to this masterpiece for ritual dance performances. Its walls have been engraved with sculptures of musicians and dancers and erotic scenes.
The history narrates that this temple was used for navigation by many European mariners sailing off the coast. However, they dubbed it as the ‘Black Pagoda’ for the numerous wrecks that took place along the coast.
In the 15th century, Konarak was robbed by the Muslim Yavana army. The central statue placed in the temple was smuggled to Puri and the Sun Temple was severely smashed during the attack. However, nature showed its grace, and over the centuries the temple got buried under the mound of sand until the early 20th century when the restoration work was started by the British. It was then when this historic site was rediscovered.
