One of the most important tokens of Indian history, the Mysore Palace is situated in the state of Karnataka. Presenting an out of the world fusion of architectural styles, this palace is also known by the name of Amba Vilas. It used to be the residence of Wodeyar Maharaja. It was rebuilt in the year 1912 when the original palace was destroyed due to an unfortunate fire accident in 1897.
During its redesigning, Henry Irwin, a famous British architect, added Saracenic style to it, thus, one can see a blend of great styles in its construction, which adds to its grandeur. The Palace houses three stories along with various square towers topped with domed arches. In the centre stands a beautiful 145 feet high gold-plated dome. The entry of the palace has been adorned with 'Gombe Thotti' or Doll's Pavilion presenting a collection of Indian and European sculptures. The main gate, known as Elephant Gate, is highlighted with floral motifs and the majestic emblem of Mysore, the two-headed Eagle.
As one moves to the south of the palace, the views of impressive Kalyana Mandapam or the wedding pavilion can be seen. Elaborate chandeliers and tall wrought iron pillars add a royal touch to its decor.
The second floor houses the majestic durbar hall known as 'Diwan-I-am'. This 55 feet long and 42 feet broad hall makes many jaws drop with its exquisitely embellished ceiling, a shimmering floor and gold-painted sculptured pillars. There are also paintings that show the scenes from the legends of Ramayana and Mahabharata.
Being nestled by twelve temples, the fort remains a serene melting pot of history with religion. Most of the temples are in Dravidian architectural style, including the most popular Varashaswamy Temple. The palace is known for housing a large collection of gold items, specially the famous 200-kilogram gold throne which is placed here every year during the Dusshera festival.
By Air: The nearest major airport to Mysore is the new Bangalore International Airport from where one can avail taxi services to reach the palace.
By Rail: The city is very well connected by rail throughout the region, and the railway station is just about 2 kilometres from the city centre.
By Road: Mysore Palace being well connected with other major towns and cities of Karnataka can be easily accessed by road.
