One of the most ancient temples of India, Meenakshi Temple lures streams of pilgrims with its majestic powers. The temple is located in the holy city of Madurai in Tamil Nadu. Dedicated to Sundareswar (form of Lord Shiva) and Meenakshi (form of Goddess Parvati), the temple remains brimming with loads of devotees seeking the blessings of almighty.
Sprawling in an area of 45 acres, the temple complex features twelve superlative gopurams (towers) adorned with sculptures. The tallest tower of the temple is 170 feet high. The focal sanctum sanctorum is around 3500 years old, while other fortifications are believed to be 1500-2000 years old. With its history dating back to thousands of years, Meenakshi Temple is truly a masterpiece. Aayiram Kaal Mandapam, a thousand pillared hall, is known for its class sculptures. The hall is a charmer for the lovers of architecture. 'Kalyana Mandapa' is another significant hall here where the marriage of Shiva and Parvati is solemnised annually in the Hindu month of 'Chaitra' (April).
The temple also houses Potramarai Kulam, a sacred pond, where worshippers go around before entering the main shrine. It is believed that this pond has been blessed by Lord Shiva who acclaimed that no marine life would nurture in it.
