Lutyens' Delhi is a region in New Delhi which has been named after the British architect Edwin Lutyens. It was Edwin Lutyens who designed grand architecture of some prominent edifices during British Empire in the 1920s and 1930s, which are still standing with great pride in the Central Delhi.
Lutyens completely transformed the outlook of New Delhi with some marvellous shifts. One-third of the planned area was converted as green space. The heart of the city was enhanced with the imposing Viceroy's House, which is now known as Rashtrapati Bhawan. This out of the world edifice acts as the official residence of the President of India. It took eight years to raise this grand structure. Edwin Lutyens incorporated a melange of Indian and Western schools of architecture to make this building look unmatched. Standing on a 330-acre estate, Rashtrapati Bhawan houses 11/2 miles of corridors, 340 rooms including 63 are living rooms, 227 columns, 35 loggias and 37 fountains.
Another piece of great wonder designed by Edwin Lutyens is the Parliament House Estate. The edifice is a true exemplar of Indian traditions with Indian symbols like "Chhajjas" and "Jali" depicting craftsmanship of the past. Today, it houses three Chambers for Lok Sabha (House of the People), Rajya Sabha (Council of States) and the erstwhile Library Hall (formerly the Princes Chamber). Travellers must also explore the majestic India Gate, an "Arc-de-Triomphe" which looks like an archway standing in the middle of a crossroad. India Gate it is a war memorial with the names of 70,000 Indian soldiers displayed on its walls who lost their lives during the World War I.
Lutyens Bungalow Zone also holds great importance in the history of India. Sprawling over an area of about 26 Square Kilometres, Lutyens Bungalow Zone belongs to the central government, apart from 254.5 acres which is in privately owned.
