World renowned for its innate historians, Ajanta and Ellora caves and Grishneshwar Jyotirling, Aurangabad is a beautiful city that has totally earned its popularity. Located in the heart of Maharashtra, Aurangabad was named after the legendary Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. It was earlier known with the name of Fatehpur; however, it was renamed when Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb made it his capital. Today, it stands with great pride cuddling the UNESCO world heritage sites of Ajanta and Ellora Caves.
No traveller visiting Aurangabad ever misses the chance to explore the Ajanta Caves. Located at a distance of 107 km from the city, these caves are home to 30 Buddhist caves which have been adorned with amazing wall paintings. These paintings beautifully depict the life of Buddha and narrate majestic stories. Where some caves are finished, some are still in the unfinished form.
Ellora Caves are another popular attraction of Aurangabad situated at 30 km from the city. This one of the most visited archaeological sites in Maharashtra houses 34 caves flaunting unmatched rock-cut architecture. The sanctuaries in the caves mirror Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism traditions.
Apart from this, Bibi-ka-Maqbara, dedicated to Rabia-ul-Daurani, is also a special treasure trove of Aurangabad. This mausoleum is also recognized as the "Taj of Deccan" for its resemblance with Agra’s Taj Mahal.
Religion devotees head for the Grishneshwar Mandir which was restored in the early 17th century by Malojiraje Bhosle, Chhatrapati Shivaji’s ancestor. Home to one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, this temple holds great importance among Hindu pilgrims.
