Considered among the world’s oldest cities, Patna - the capital of Bihar state - finds a significant place in the history of India. Its history dates back to over 2,000 years ago. The heritage city was known as Pataliputra during ancient times. It saw the rise and fall of many great dynasties and with the ascent of each new kingdom, Patna got a new name. For history buffs, Patna is a perfect destination to explore ancient sites. Located on the bank of the River Ganges, the fort in Pataligram built by King Ajatshatru in the 6th Century BC is a notable attraction of the city. Apart from this, the archaeological sites at Bhiknapahari, Agam Kuan, Bulandi Bagh and Kankar Bagh are the treasure trove for history lovers. Digging into the impressive ruins at Kumhrar, which range from 600 BC to 600 AD, is another interesting activity for them.

The huge granary named Golghar, built by the British army in 1786 in the wake of the great famine of 1770, draws good number of tourists to the place. Martyr's Memorial marks the supreme sacrifice of seven freedom fighters during the Quit India Movement of August 1942.

Patna, being the birth place of Guru Gobind Singh, holds a significant place among Sikhs. Built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the sacred shrine of Harmandir Takht houses belongings of Guru Gobind Singh and Sikh holy texts. From Buddhist sculptures to First World War cannon, articles belonging to the Mauryan and Gupta periods; Patna Museum has got everything to interest tourists.

Then there is the 16th Century Sher Shah Suri Masjid, a fine example of pure Afghan architecture. Established in 1900, Khuda Baksh Oriental Library is quite popular among reading enthusiasts who love to explore rich collection of rare Arabic and Persian manuscripts, Rajput and Mughal paintings, etc.

By Rail: Patna Junction is the closest railway station at a distance of 2 km from the city. There are regular trains for metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Ranchi, etc.

By Road: Patna has an extensive road network. Regular buses ply from here to prominent cities of the country.
