Vaishali
A Cradle of Buddhist & Jain Civilisation

Vaishali, a small village in Bihar, is a popular tourist destination with religious, historical and archaeological significance. Considered as one of the first democratic republics of the world, Vaishali is named after Raja Vishal of the Ramayan era. The ancient place finds its mention in historical records and mythological scriptures such as the Mahabharata. Being the birth place of Lord Mahavira and Lord Buddha’s association with it, Vaishali serves as a holy place for Buddhist and Jain devotees.

The 18.3 metres high Ashoka Pillar was built by Emperor Ashoka at Kolhua commemorating the last sermon of Lord Buddha here. Made of a highly-polished single piece of red sandstone, the pillar has a life size figure of a lion on its top. Next to the pole is a small tank named Ramkund and a brick stupa making it an extremely revered place for Buddhists.

Bawan Pokhar is an old temple located on the northern bank of Bawan Pokhar tank. The temple was built during the Pala period and has beautiful pictures of various Hindu deities.

Buddha Stupa I and II are significant holy Buddhist sites containing the ashes of Lord Buddha preserved in stone caskets. Based on their discovery and excavation, the stupas have been named so.

Abhishek Pushkarn is an ancient tank famous for its sacred waters. It is believed that the erstwhile kings and elected representatives of Vaishali used to take a bath in its holy waters before their swearing in.

Built by Buddha Vihar Society, Vishwa Shanti Stupa is a symbol of peace and tranquility. Lush greenery around this beautiful, 125 feet tall white pagoda along with serene environs adds extreme beauty to it. There is a pond surrounding the pagoda where tourists can take pleasure in boating.

Being the birth place of Lord Mahavira, Kundalpur is greatly revered by Jain followers. It is a pilgrimage place for them where Lord Mahavira is believed to have spent the first 22 years of His life.

Spread in 1 kms with 2 metres high walls, Raja Vishal ka Garh is deemed to be the ancient parliament house of Lichchavi kings where around 7,000 representatives used to gather.

There are various fairs and festivals that are organised here. Celebrating the birth anniversary of Jain Tirthankar Lord Mahavira, Vaishali Mahotsava witnesses huge number of Jain devotees from all over India. Sonepur Fair is another popular event which runs for almost 14 days and is considered to be the biggest animal fair in Asia.

Other major attractions in Vaishali are:

  • Choumukhi Mahadeva
  • Vaishali Museum

Vaishali is famous for beautiful Sikki grass craft items which are basically hand-woven baskets, mats, etc. made of a grass named Sikki. Shoppers can also get Madhubani paintings and stone sculptures from here.
