Trichy or Tiruchirappalli is Tamil Nadu’s fourth largest city situated on the banks of the Cauvery river. Rock Fort is the most popular place of Trichy. It is a massive 83 metres high rock and believed to be one of the oldest ones in the world. A temple perched at its summit is the main attraction here. After climbing 420 steps, the temple can be reached which is famous for its unique building style and has inscriptions dating back to the 3rd Century BC. It has two sub parts - Uchchi Pillaiyar Koil, a 7th Century temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha and the 6th Century Thayumanaswamy Temple built by Pallava King Mahendravarman I in which Lord Shiva is worshipped. Apart from them, there are 6th and 7th centuries cave temples built by the Pallava kings that are adorned with exquisite sculptures.
Other notable temples in Trichy are Samayapuram Amman Temple, Vekkaliamman Temple, Sri Ranga Nathaswamy Temple and Viralimalai Murgum Temple.
Trichy is home to beautiful churches as well. The 18th Century St. Joseph's Church is considered among one of the oldest churches of India. It is located near Teppakulam which was built by Schwartz. Another church is St. John Church which was built in 1812. The white-painted church houses historic Christian monuments.
Also known as ‘Grand Anicut’, the ancient Kallanai Dam is 15 km away from Trichy and is built by the Chola Ruler Karikalan in the 2nd Century AD across the Cauvery river. It is considered among the oldest functioning dams of the world. The lush green and peaceful surroundings make it an ideal place to visit.
In addition, tourists can visit various eco-friendly areas of Trichy. Situated at 80 kms from the city, Pachamalai Hill Station is a wonderful place dotted with lovely streams and splendid waterfalls. Its hill ranges provide ample trekking opportunities to adventure lovers. Places like Thalamalai, Ponnanayar Dam and Srirangam Island are notable for offering enchanting views of nature.
