Tirupati is a holy town located in Andhra Pradesh’s Chittoor District. Highly revered by Hindus, this fascinating temple town is believed to be the sacred abode of Lord Tirupati. Each year huge number of devotees from all over India visit the famous Sri Venkateswara Temple to pay their homage. This temple is a pilgrimage place for Hindus which makes Tirupati a very popular tourist spot, especially for undertaking religious journeys. Apart from its glorious temples, Tirupati enchants visitors with its serene ambience and overwhelming beauty.

Tirupati is most famous for its ancient Sri Venkateswara Temple also known as Tirumala Venkateswara Swamy Temple, an extremely revered shrine dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The 12th Century temple has various complexes inside its premise and each day a special pooja is performed here in early morning. It is located on the seventh peak of Tirumala Hill and festivals like Vaikuntha Ekadasi, Rama Navami and Brahmotsavam are celebrated with full enthusiasm here.

Located within Sri Venkateswara Temple’s premises is revered Swami Pushikarini Lake. As per legends, the lake was located in Vaikuntham in which Lord Vishnu along with his wife took a bath. Devotees take a holy dip in the lake before visiting the temple. Spread over 1.5 acres, this natural freshwater spring lake is believed to get one rid of all sins.

At 5 km from Tirupati, there is Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple or Alamelu Manga Temple which is dedicated to Goddess Padmavathi. Built during the reign of King Thondaman Chakravarthy, this temple is frequented by pilgrims. It is believed that Padmavathi was the daughter of Akasha Raja of Thondamandalam and married to Lord Venkateswara.

Other major temples in Tirupati are Sri Govindraja Swamy Temple, Sri Kondandarama Swamy Temple, Sri Kapileswara Swamy Temple and Sri Kalyana Venkateswara Swamy Temple.

Located at about 600 feet, the Chandragiri Fort displays great example of architectural expertise which was constructed during the Vijayanagar Empire. The fort is built on a huge rock and is decorated with exquisite stucco work. A rich collection of items belonging to erstwhile royalties is found in Raja Mahal. Tourists can watch the sound and light show, which is organised here twice a day.

Horsley Hills is a stunning hill station located at 4,100 feet and offers various adventure sports to adventure buffs like zorbing, rappelling, rock climbing, trekking, etc. The drive to the place is very scenic and has a thick vegetation of Mahogany, Jacaranda, Sandalwood, Gulmohar and Eucalyptus trees on both sides of the road. Unspoilt natural beauty is the highlight of the place. Akasa Ganga, a beautiful waterfall, also deserves a visit. Its environs are quite mesmerizing. Visit Silathoranam, a heritage site famous for its natural rock formation.

While touring Tirupati, one can get toys made of red wood. Religious goods like idols, pendants, paintings and images can also be bought. Wooden replica of Lord Tirumala is most famous among all.

How to Reach Tirupati

By Air: Tirupati Airport is 15 km from Tirupati and has regular flights from all major Indian cities.

By Rail: There are regular trains from Tirupati Railway Station to all metro cities of the country. Renigunta Junction is near to the main city.

By Road: A good network of roads connects Tirupati to other cities of Andhra Pradesh. The option of luxury and standard buses are available. Cabs can also be hired.
